How Often Should You Change Your Toothbrush?

A cup full of different toothbrushes

It’s important to change your toothbrush out regularly, but it can hard to know when exactly that should be. How often should you switch it out? The answer depends on your oral health, usage and personal preference.

We recommend switching out your toothbrush at least every 3 to 4 months. Consider replacing your toothbrush more often if:

  • You’ve been sick
  • You store your toothbrush close to other toothbrushes
  • The bristles on your toothbrush are frayed

To prolong the life of your toothbrush, be sure to keep it clean. The American Dental Association recommends rinsing your toothbrush with water after brushing in order to wash away any toothpaste residue and saliva. After cleaning, be sure to store your toothbrush in a vertical position so it can air dry, as bacteria can build up if it’s stored in a closed container.

Clinical research shows that newer toothbrushes or toothbrush heads can remove more plaque than worn out ones, so be sure to replace yours at least every 3 to 4 months!
